The call for protection of the Spanish citrus industry comes following problems last season with the appearance of a fungus that does not exist in Spain and which was imported into the country on Brazilian citrus. Spanish growers are also concerned about the possible arrival of the devastating citrus canker disease. An outbreak in Florida last year is still threatening citrus crops in the south of the US state.
