Former Safeway logistics chief Lawrence Christensen has hitched his wagon to Sainsbury’s.

Sainsbury’s has appointed former Safeway logistics chief Lawrence Christensen as their new supply chain director

Christensen, who will take up a place on the operations board, will replace Martin White as head of logistics in a deal which sees him work for Sainsbury’s for a set period of 16 months.

During that time, Christensen will be focusing on driving efficiencies within the retailer’s supply chain and also look to recruit a long-term successor.

Sainsbury’s has invested more than £400 million in its supply chain in recent years, which has included seven new distribution centres, however the retailer has suffered a number of difficulties, particularly computer glitches in its largely automated systems.

Justin King, chief executive, said: “I’m delighted we have secured someone of Lawrence’s calibre and experience. Having invested significantly in updating our supply chain infrastructure we now need to focus on detailed operational issues to ensure our customers see the benefit.”

Sainsbury’s said White, former director of supply chain, had decided to pursue his career outside the company.

Christensen said: “I have always been an admirer of the Sainsbury’s brand and I am delighted to be joining the team at this important time.”

Meanwhile, retail entrepreneur Philip Green has denied rumours he was about to launch a bid for Sainsbury’s as ‘absolute rubbish’.
