Chiquita Brands International has reported year-over-year increases in local banana prices in all its markets for October-November 2008, on generally flat volumes.

In its Fresh Express value-added salads business, the company reported an eight per cent year-over-year improvement in net revenue per case during the two-month period, on a one per cent volume decrease.

Fernando Aguirre, chairman and chief executive officer, said: “We continue our pricing discipline to help offset higher industry costs. Banana volume remains about flat, and we expect that the relatively tight industry-wide supply conditions that we have seen throughout 2008 will continue, especially in light of recent industry-wide flooding which affected parts of Costa Rica and Panama.”

Banana prices in the company’s core European markets were up one per cent year on year on a local currency basis, or down six per cent on a US dollar basis.
