Chiquita approached in Colombian sale

Chiquita told freshinfo that it was approached by Colombian-based producer and exporter Banacol concerning the potential sale of Chiquita’s banana-producing and port operations in Colombia. Talks are ongoing with Banacol’s holding company Invesmar. The talks also involve a possible long-term agreement for Chiquita’s purchase of Colombian bananas.

"This is not part of any strategy by Chiquita to divest," said Chiquita’s Dennis Christou. "We review all our operations all the time and the reason for this announcement is that rumours and articles about the discussion were causing anxiety among our employees."

About 10 per cent of all bananas Chiquita sources in Latin America are grown in Colombia. The country accounts for 11 million boxes of Chiquita bananas.
