The Chinese floriculture industry has signalled its intention to expand into the international flower market. It signed an environmental standards agreement with the Dutch certification organisation MPS.

The Dutch group will assess the quality of Chinese floriculture, as well as ensuring environmental standards are met. This will allow China’s performance to be tested against MPS’s other 4,000 worldwide members.

China’s floriculture production site covers around 140,000 hectares and has an estimated 5,000 holdings eligible for evaluation. However, it currently only exports a small number of potted plants.

Signatories include the Chinese Flowers Association, the Certification and Accreditation Administration of the People’s Republic of China and government ministers.
