China opens up to SA citrus

South African citrus producers can now export to China, according to the Citrus Growers Association (CGA) of South Africa.

The list of production units, orchards and storage facilities provided to The Chniese Plant Health (AQSIQ) officials in June 2006 has been accepted, according to the Department of Agriculture (DoA).

A total of 393 production units are now registered for exports to China in accordance with new protocol.

Exporters planning to send fruit to China are advised to study the protocol on the CGA website to ensure that they meet all the requirements. They must also inform the DoA in advance if they wish to present fruit for export.

The PUC, orchard number, packhouse code and storage facility code must be printed on each carton. Those that do not display this information, or have details that do not correspond with the list provided, will not be allowed into China.

All cartons must have a sticker with ‘For the Peoples Republic of China’ written in both English and Mandarin.

The exports will enter China at Dalian, Tianjin, Beijing, Shanghai, Qingdao and Nanjing.

The CGA and DoA will hold a China Workshop in Port Elizabeth on October 20. The session will cover all aspects of the present protocol, as well as planning for the future.
