Bedfordshire chilli expert Joanna Plumb has been filmed for a new BBC programme that aims to show viewers how to cut food bills and make the most of good ingredients.

The series, entitled Economy Gastronomy, was being filmed last week in Bedfordshire, the focus being Plumb offering hints and tips on cooking with chillies. She has previously appeared on Ready Steady Cook and at the BBC Good Food Show.

Plumb, who runs Edible Ornamentals from her nursery in Chawston, is quickly becoming a known authority on chillies. The company is a member of Tastes of Bedfordshire, which supports and promotes local food and craft producers.

More than 40 varieties of chilli are available at Cherwood nursery, including the Dorset Naga and the Habaneros, two of the hottest chillies in the world. Guests can either pick the ripe chillies straight from the plant, or buy their own plants to grow throughout the season at home.

Recently, Edible Ornamentals has also diversified, and visitors to the nursery can now pick their own tomatoes, peppers, aubergines, courgettes and spinach.

Plumb said: “It’s a great opportunity to show people how versatile and economic fresh chillies are and that they can add another dimension to dishes, especially when they’re picked fresh”.

The first show featuring Plumb is scheduled to be broadcast on Wednesday at 8pm on BBC2.
