Representatives of Chilean exporters' association Asoex, the agriculture ministry (SAG) and the port authority at Valparaíso (EPV) signed an agreement last month to develop systems to centralise plant health and quality control inspection and documentation for fresh produce exports.

The new system, Eximsag-EPV is expected to lead to a cost saving of some $5million over the next two years as export and import logistics are improved and port users stand to save both in terms of time and money. The turnaround time for lorries is expected to come down by almost an hour to five hours which will also help reduce congestion in and around the port.
