Chilean Hass volumes to fall

Chilean Hass avocado production is five to 10 per cent down on its predicted yield this coming season, adding to a general shortage of the fruit on the global market.

President of the Chilean Hass Avocado Committee, Adolfo Ochagavía, said on a trip to the UK that production was looking more like 200,000 tonnes rather than the predicted 215,000t, although it is a high-yielding year for plantations.

He said: “The frosts in July has meant that yield is down. Last season Mexico was down in volume, which is it again this year, as was Chile and it brought good prices. Demand for ‘ripe and ready’ is high.”
