Chilean Hass through the roof

UK sales of Chilean Hass avocados have gone through the roof this season, according to the Chilean Hass Avocado Committee (CHAC).

CHAC’s general manager Adolpho Ochagavia said the UK supermarkets had already exceeded the expected total for the season.

He said: “We had forecast sales for the whole season to be around 4,300 tonnes but we reached that at the end of last week. Now we are expecting to reach around 5,000t in total.”

The Chilean avocado season is now expected to continue for another month in line with demand.

Ochagavia said he had been very impressed with the UK supermarkets’ support for the association’s promotional campaign. “The retail buyers and managers I met today [Thursday] were all very happy with the sales of Chilean Hass avocado, and they are making a very good margin on the product, as much as 70 per cent,” he claimed.

Recognising the success of distributing recipe and information booklets in packs of Chilean Hass avocado, the campaign will now extend this to other products as well.

“Sainsbury’s are now putting the booklets in selected packs of tomatoes, because we wanted to encourage sales from people not already buying Hass avocado,” he said.
