Less fruit has left the leading Chilean port of Valparaiso this season

Official figures show that Chilean fruit exports have declined year on year to May 3 by 6.1 per cent.

Sendings are down across a whole range of product lines to the tune of 1.69 million tonnes with grapes, red apples, avocados, plums, green apples, peaches, kiwifruit, oranges and lemons all showing a decline.

In total grape sendings were down to 774,050 tonnes a 0.98 per cent year on year drop. Although region by region the IV and V regions showed a decline of 5.5 per cent 7.7 per cent respectively while the III, VII and Metropolitan regions showed increases of 3.8, 4.3 and 1.1 per cent each.

Recent season averages have seen 97 per cent of exports despatched by May 3, but this season Thompson Seedless is 2.3 per cent down on last year ,while Flame Seedless sendings are 5.1 per cent up on last year and Sugraone is 34.5 per cent up. And in the red grape sector, Red Globe, which is usually 92 per cent complete by this stage is 9.3 per cent down on last season’s levels for this point in the season while Crimson Seedless is 2.7 per cent down.

Sendings of plums and peaches are 16.9 per cent and five per cent down respectively while nectarines have climed 8.2 per cent to 60,531t. And cherries recorded a new record with an 83.9 per cent increase in sendings to 44,422t.

Meanwhile, although the apple season is only at its mid-point, Royal Gala sendings so far this season are down 7.5 per cent on 2007 and Red Delicious export volumes are showing a 4.8 per cent decline.
