Chilean berry exports overcome strikes

Public sector strikes in Chile in late November have had little effect on blueberry exports, it has been reported.

Jorge Bawlitza Muñoz of Entrerios Farms told FPJ: “There were strikes, but enough SAG members continued to work and fruit exports were unaffected.

There were strikes at customs, he said, but all paperwork was handled the week after the strikes ended.

The Chilean government and the CUT Labor Federation have since signed an agreement, offering a 6.9 per cent wage adjustment and a two-tier bonus for ending the strike.

The Chilean blueberry season is running approximately three weeks later than usual, according to Entrerios Farms, although spring weather has been described as “perfect”.

The business is on course to double its blueberry production to nearly 1,000 tonnes of blueberries this season and is eyeing the UK and European markets with growing interest.
