Chilean avocado growers are hoping to have increased volumes this year as their season gets underway.

Growers and exporters came together last week for their national conference in Chile to celebrate Avocado Day 2009, when Chilean Hass Avocado Association president Adolfo Ochagavía told the industry that production is set to rise to some 260,000 tonnes this year. He did warn, however, that returns are likely to be down on 2008 levels.

The season began three weeks ago and the association is promoting heavily in major export markets already. Peak volumes will be reached in August when Chile hopes to start sending to the world’s largest consumer of the fruit, Mexico.
