Chilean avocado exports slip

The Chilean avocado export crop is expected to plummet this season according to latest statistics.

The export shortfall is largely attributed to an off production year as well as the cold front which hit South America in July.

The 2010/2011 forecast is for exports to contract by 39 per cent this season, according to data compiled by SimFRUIT.

The Chilean market intelligence system, developed by Fedefruta, Asoex and Decofrut, said the preliminary figure is due to the low spring temperatures in 2009, which affected the crop’s polinisation and flowering periods.

The severe frosts during recent weeks, caused by a polar cold front, have also impacted on volume.
