Chile white grape winding down

Seedless white grape from Chile is finishing its season early this year, due to heavy rains earlier this month.

Neil Denny of importer Richard Hochfeld said: “From San Felipe southwards, there was enough rain to finish off the white seedless job.”

There is still fruit on the water that was delayed leaving Chile due to a port strike settled two weeks ago. “If that comes in with condition issues, everyone will be looking to get into Indian fruit sooner,” said Denny. “But they had rain in Hyderabad and other production areas at the weekend.”

Growers in Israel, and to a lesser extent Morocco and Egypt, saw their vines of white seedless varieties affected by the cold snap in January. The result is likely to be an increased opportunity for Mexico in the UK in the gap after Indian supplies, in late May and early June.
