Chile plans for organic growth

Jose Antonio Benavente, chairman of Chilean Organic Association believes there is a wide array of advantages for Chilean growers who opt to grow organic produce. Benavente made his comments at the international business event in Santiago.

Benavente said: “Chile is ideal for organic production, soil conditions are ideal. Between 1993 ñ 2000 the area of land under organic production grew by 539 per cent.” Organic production also began to form an important part of the export market in the 1990s with 70 per cent of all organics exported.

Benavente believes that Chile needs to look to grow its organic market in the UK. He said: “The US has been a very good market and has been better than the UK so far. However, with Chileans looking at increasing organic hectares there are hopes for growth in Europe.”
