Chicory win for Amcor

UK-based Amcor Flexibles, together with seven other companies, has won the 2005 Dutch Packaging Supply Chain Prize for a flow-wrapped 500g pack of fresh chicory.

Presented at the Dutch Packaging Awards ceremony in Rotterdam, the award recognizes the most successful co-operation of different companies on the path to launching a new concept on the Dutch market.

The judges selected Amcor Flexibles, Quality Growers Holland, The Greenery, Deka-Markt, Visser Media Producties, Creative Formula, Ulma Packaging and Espera Nederland as the joint winners for their part in revitalising the chicory market with a product which has increased sales by 20 per cent.

Produced by Amcor Flexibles at Ledbury in the UK, the winning flow-wrap was Amcor P-Plus treated, ensuring the correct modified atmosphere to optimise shelf life.

An antimist system further maintained freshness and quality and enhanced the visibility of the chicory on the retail shelf.

The judges recognised that chicory sales had been declining in recent years and the close co-operation between these companies succeeded in delivering a new pack format for chicory which has been readily accepted by consumers and achieved a considerable increase in sales within just a few months of its launch.

The award was received by Amcor Flexibles for the packaging, Quality Growers Holland, for the product, The Greenery for transit packaging, retailer Deka-Markt, design agencies Visser Media Producties and Creative Formula and packaging machinery suppliers Ulma Packaging and Espera Nederland.
