Two new chestnut mushroom strains from spawn supplier Amycel are currently being trialled by Oakfield Farm Products Ltd.

The mushrooms are being grown for their quality by the Worcestershire-based company as it looks to increase the number of its mushroom lines.

Jim Robinson, commercial manager at Oakfield Farm Products, said: “As the country’s leading grower of chestnut mushrooms, we are very excited about this development. The new strains have the potential to have the same impact on chestnut mushroom growing as the ‘U’ strains did for white mushrooms in the early 1980s. It’s early days, but I have been very impressed with the quality and density of the mushrooms that we have produced so far.

“Further trials are now taking place on a number of our production sites, including our five-acre underground mushroom farm in Wiltshire, two farms in Worcestershire and our farm in the Netherlands, on both organic and conventional compost.”

Oakfield Farm Products Ltd currently grows and markets around 140,000 kilos of conventionally grown and organic mushrooms of the white, chestnut, shiitake, oyster and horse varieties per week, and plans to increase its capacity in the near future.
