Sungover of Sydenham, a surefire hit, pop pickers

The first prize in the Northwest Cherry Pop Pickers competition, in association with Tesco, has been won by Sungover from Sydenham in south London.

The band impressed the judges panel with its dynamic lyrics and engaging melodies, winning a recording session with a leading music producer, a gig in London, professional photography and music marketing advice.

George Smith of Northwest cherries, who is certainly no Simon Cowell, said politely: “The quality of entries was outstanding and Sungover's entry really stood out for being original. It's a fantastic achievement and we hope that we can help kick-start the successful music career the band deserves. They are truly the pick of the crop.

“It's a trial for us but it's gone really well,” Smith added. “We've spent a number of weeks listening to the entries and it has generated a lot of interest and publicity. We want to attract younger cherry consumers and music is the ideal way to do this.

“Tesco is a big cherry retailer and it also has good music departments in its stores so it fits the profile perfectly.”

Tesco customer manager Sally Eglin said: “We've seen a massive growth in cherries but we're still aiming to encourage new consumers. Cherries are still seen as an indulgent purchase ñ we want to broaden their appeal.”

Sungover's guitarist Toby Feakin concluded: “We are delighted to win this prestigious competition. We were really surprised because the standard of entries is so high and there were so many entries. This is our great chance to break into the big time.”
