Northwest Cherry Growers is positive this season could present a vintage crop.

Growers in the US have enjoyed an excellent start to the season and hope to export more than 450,000 cases to the UK in the next 10 weeks.

Despite some brief showery patches, weather in the growing region has been ideal for the crop, with Wenatchee product proving of good size and sugar content.

George Smith, Northwest Cherries European representative, told FPJ: “Our industry has been waiting for some time now to have a vintage crop. So far, the weather has been kind to us. In the early districts, fruit colour and volume on the trees has been excellent, with sugar levels now increasing as we move into full production.”

On-pack promotions, in-store radio slots, sampling, shopping trolley adverts and wholesale market activities are planned in the UK during the fruit’s season from week 25 to 36.

“We have good support from all the major retailers, wholesalers and the independent sector,” added Smith.
