Certis has introduced a revamped version of its cucumber powdery mildew treatment Fungaflor (Imazalil) after a two-year absence on the market.

The updated Fungaflor has been granted PSD label approval.

According to Certis it has a 72-hour harvest interval with a maximum of three treatments per crop, and also boasts the advantage of delivering additional Mycosphaerella control.

Derek Hargreaves of the Cucumber Growers Association welcomed the arrival of the PSD approval in time for second crops following replanting.

“Some growers have had major problems with mildew this season, in at least one case accounting for considerable crop losses. Now there is a solution,” he said.

Highlighting Fungaflor’s additional benefit of Mycosphaerella control, Hargreaves added that while varietal tolerance to powdery mildew has improved in recent years, it appears to be connected to an increased susceptibility to Mycosphaerella.

“This approval will have widespread appeal as a single treatment in the early stages of production, three days before harvesting starts, to control Mycosphaerella and ensure powdery mildew is in check,” he said.

Certis urged growers to check the new product’s label carefully.

“The dose rate remains the same at 50mls in 100 litres water, the same rate as used in both the Netherlands and Belgium,” said the company’s Alan Horgan.

“This should be applied immediately at the first sign of mildew and growers are advised to use the correct water volume and spray nozzle setting to achieve maximum cover of the whole plant.”

Hargreaves said he was delighted Certis had supported the approval.

“Cucumbers is a sector that other companies have tended to overlook as too small a market, but for those of us in the industry, access to these formulations is of major importance,” he claimed.
