A couple in Bristol are reported to have found a live frog in a bag of Aldi’s Nature’s Pick rocket.
The unexpected amphibian was discovered by Joe Archer Joy and his wife Sarah Walker, who bought the salad from the discounter’s branch in the Bristol district of Bedminster on 18 September, according toBristol Live.
It was only once the couple had eaten two thirds of the salad, and kept it in their fridge for two days, that they discovered the frog at the bottom of the bag.
It is the second time this year that a live frog has been found in an Aldi salad product, with Shevaughan Tolputt of Camborne, Cornwall, discovering one in a British round lettuce in July.
Joy, a sales assistant, toldBristol Live: 'My wife was absolutely horrified. It was quite a big frog -– and she was the only one who had been eating the rocket.
'We weren't sure at first if the frog was alive or dead, because it was pretty still in the bag. But then I picked up the bag and it moved a bit. It was just living in our fridge for two days.'
He added: 'My wife doesn't seem to have got ill from it, but it's certainly put her off eating salad. I don't think she's going to be having rocket again any time soon.'
Aldi is reported to have apologised and offered the couple £40 in compensation, however they don’t believe this is enough.
A spokesperson for Aldi said: “We have apologised to Mr Archer Joy and offered him a full refund. This type of incident, while incredibly rare, can naturally occur with fresh produce.”
After a chilly couple of days, the frog was released back into the wild and appeared to be unharmed. 'I let it out in our garden, and it just hopped off. It didn't seem too fussed,' Joy said.
