A financial aid package for banana growers in some of the European Union's outermost regions, including the Canary Islands, the Azores and Madeira, and French overseas territories, has been approved by MEPs, Eurofruit reports.
The deal involves a one-off payment of up to €40m to help offset the impact of the latest round of tariff reductions for banana producers exporting to the EU from third countries.
The updated rules also include the financial allocation for specific measures in the EU outermost regions and smaller Aegean islands to mitigate farming and address marketing difficulties.
Funding, which must be formally approved by the council, will be allocated as €20.24m to the Canary Islands, €18.52m to French overseas departments and €1.24m for the Azores and Madeira.
