The British Carrot Grower’s Association is showcasing 45 varieties at its annual exhibition in October.

The Variety Demonstration and Trade Exhibition in Nottinghamshire will include varieties from seven seed companies including Elsoms, Nickersons, Clause Tezier, Seminis, Nunhems, Agriseeds and Rijk Zwaan.

The BCGA said that a barley cover crop has been used to protect the demonstration field from soil blow to combat a challenging growing season, and the field has also been installed with a SIMBA Aqueel - a device to ensure efficient crop irrigation.

The BCGA is stressing the importance of effective irrigation methods following the Water Framework Directive, and the issue of environmental impacts in horticultural field irrigation will be discussed on the day.

In addition, open day visitors will be able to learn about a computer system, which supplies data directly from field to office. The PIC system from Fairfield Control Systems uses sensors and logs data, which can be accessed via the internet as and when the grower requires.
