Carrot growers host demonstration

British Carrot Growers’ Association (BCGA) is to host a variety demonstration and trade exhibition next month.

The 2010 BCGA demonstration site has 47 carrot varieties provided by six seed companies including Elsoms, Nickersons, Clause Tezier, Seminis, Nunhems and Rijk Zwaan. The varieties were drilled on 11 May.

Seedling emergence and plant establishment on all variety plots is said to be “excellent” with sufficient warmth and rainfall this spring. Subsequent growth was slow until late July when showery conditions combined with warm temperature encouraged more rapid growth of carrots, according to the association.

Taste is the theme for this event with each seed company submitting two varieties for evaluation by Newcastle University. A more informal taste assessment will be available for delegates on the day, organised by Mactavish-West.

Many other trade companies will be present at the variety demonstration day and all who have a commercial interest in carrot production are invited.

The event takes place on 7 October at Barracks Farm in Nottinghamshire.
