Carrot exhibition and demonstration set for October 5

The 2004 British Carrot Growers Association (BCGA) carrot variety demonstration and trade exhibition will be held on October 5 at Combs Farm, Farnsfield, Notts, courtesy of Tim Hardstaff and Freshgro Ltd.

This year 40 varieties were drilled in a commercial crop on May 12 by Mike Day from NIAB. Varieties have been submitted by Elsoms Seeds (13), Agriseed (3), Nunhems (4), Rijk Zwaan (3), Thompson & Morgan (1), Clause Tezier (7), Seminis (4), and Nickersons Seeds (5 at two seed rates).

In addition, trials funded by BCGA and Horticulture Development Council will be open for viewing and discussion. New materials for nematode control in carrots are being compared at a nearby site. Treatments include Temik, Vydate and Garlic. Poster displays of results from other trials will also be available, for example regarding Sclerotinia control and alternative materials for weed control.

Ancillary trade exhibitors will be present. Companies booking stand space so far include: Concept Engineering from Holland, which will show a video of its carrot colour sorter, Plantsystems, Revaho, Garford Engineering, Jones Engineering, Wroot Water Systems, Javelin Water Engineering, Peal Engineering, Syngenta Crop Protection, Bayer CropScience, Edwards Farm Machinery and Ecospray.

The variety plots will be open to all growers from 11am to 4pm.
