Last year's event took place in Nottinghamshire

The British Carrot Growers’ Association (BCGA) is to host its annual carrot variety demonstration and trade exhibition next month.

The association will stage the event at Naburn Hill Farm, home to Hobson Farming Ltd, near York on 6 October.

The 2011 BCGA demonstration site has 47 carrot varieties provided by six seed companies - namely Elsoms, Nickersons, Clause Tezier, Seminis, Nunhems and Rijk Zwaan.

The varieties were drilled on 20 April in “worryingly dry” conditions.

The association said in a statement: “However, seedling emergence and plant establishment on all variety plots is excellent due to the skill of Rodger Hobson who had to counter the dry spring with frequent low amounts of irrigation. The varieties also survived a severe wind/soil blow in mid May. Subsequent growth was rapid due to more rainfall combined with good levels of sunshine.”

Innovation is the theme for this event and all the trade companies will be asked to submit their most innovative product or service prior to the event and a winner will be chosen by the BCGA R&D committee.

Each seed company will be asked to submit two varieties for evaluation by the delegates so that a Best Variety in Show award can be determined.
