The Caretrace system which links growers and consumers, pioneered by Blue Skies, could be extended to producers in the UK if domestic interest can be cultivated.

Blue Skies began the scheme in 2007 to great success and has said it would be willing to help tutor produce industry partners in the UK to use the system.

Caretrace provides grower information and interactive tools to allow consumers to keep in touch with producers and has been used with Blue Skies’ partners in Africa thus far.

It is hoped that the scheme can be extended, firstly by adding more videos, photos, blogs, social networking elements and school resources and secondly by encompassing other companies.

Simon Derrick, communications director at Blue Skies, told freshinfo following his address to delegates at the Freshconex forum at Fruit Logistica last week: “Caretrace is only on prepared fruit at the moment but now we want to share that with other products and that could definitely include local suppliers in the UK.

“If someone wanted to employ the system for UK growers we would definitely help tutor them in it. We have had so much positive feedback and, as members of the produce industry, we have a unique story to tell that could really help consumers understand about the supply chain and add value to the product.”
