Capespan is set to trial market the Cara Cara navel orange variety in selected supermarkets across the UK.
A total of 50,000 cartons will be imported from South Africa over the next two weeks.
Martin Dunnett, trading director at Capespan, said: “This is a new and alternative orange variety, and we will be testing the UK market to see if it is receptive to it.
“The Cara Cara navel has an internal pink or red colour, and the flesh is delicate and full of flavour. The fruit has an excellent eating quality.
“There has already been a good reaction to the variety in trials, and the supermarket testing looks promising.
“If the trial marketing in supermarkets proves successful, we will look into importing larger volumes next year.”
Capespan will also be importing the Clemengold variety, which will be available from early to mid-July until September.
The total volume of Clemengold shipped in 2006 is expected to double last year’s figure of between 70,000 and 80,000 cartons.
