Capespan is the new Western Cape Exporter of the Year for 2004.

The announcement was made on Wednesday in Cape Town at the 200th anniversary dinner of the Cape Regional Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the biggest chamber in South Africa.

The winner was judged on the degree of company commitment to exporting, the proportion of total output devoted to exports and the volume in relation to the size of the company.

“I am delighted as the award sends out a very positive message to South African fruit growers on the one hand and international customers on the other hand. The recognition from a Capespan staff point of view also means a lot,” said Capespan managing director, Neil Oosthuizen.

Capespan is still the leading South African fruit exporter and exports about 66 million cartons to more than 60 countries on six continents. This includes 19m cartons procured from other sources such as New Zealand, Egypt, Argentina and China. Its customers include the top 30 global retailers.

Capespan markets fruit from South Africa under the Cape, Outspan and Goldland brands, and recently started marketing fruit from empowerment projects under the Thandi brand.
