Capespan became the healthy heroes of the 2010 Re:fresh Awards, landing the 5 A DAY supporter of the Year gong.

The importer beat off stiff competition from Foods from Spain and FreshDrop to make it three trophies in consecutive years after supporting the 5 A DAY campaign, launched under government control in 2003.

In the last 12 months, Capespan has promoted the healthy eating message in many areas, but most extensively within the NHS School Fruit and Vegetable Scheme (SFVS), which supplies two million 4-6 year olds with a piece of 5 A DAY approved fruit or vegetable on every school day.

The scheme reaches 16,000 schools across the country and Capespan, as one of the main suppliers is responsible for up to 25 per cent of the core fruit lines. It has used this position to improve its portfolio of products to make them more attractive to children, as well as organising competitions that reinforce the 5 A DAY message with tomorrow’s fresh produce purchasers.

Capespan trading director Martin Dunnett told freshinfo: “This award is recognition for our hard work and commitment to add value for our customers and the fresh produce industry as a whole over many years, but particularly in the last 12 months and to again come away with the silverware for the third successive year is a testament to our staff and everyone associated with Capespan International Limited.

“The 5 A DAY Supporter of the Year prize is seen as particularly important in helping improve consumption of fresh produce in the UK in general, and specifically amongst children, and we are delighted to be acknowledged by our peers in the industry for our efforts in this area.

“Who knows this years 5 A DAY award could mean we are on for five in a row - lets see if we can keep this successful record going.”
