Capespan is hoping to cash in on the superfood craze, with the recent addition of pomegranates to its portfolio.
The first container of Indian pomegranates arrived in the UK on February 2 and was well received, according to the importer.
Further supplies are expected on February 16 and while volumes will remain small this year, if forecast sales are as promising as expected, Capespan hopes to build up supplies in due course.
“It is the third year that Capespan has been importing grapes from Mahindra
and this is an exciting opportunity to work together again on the importing
of Indian pomegranates in 2007,” said Capespan’s Laraine Brown.
“If all goes to plan we should have in excess of 100,000 cases from the Indian season.
“However, we are hoping, if it takes off, to have all year continuity by adding supplies from Spain and Peru. And we have growers interested in planting pomegranates in South Africa as well.
“It’s something new for us but it could be very interesting.”
