Paul Mastronardi of Canadian grower/exporter Mastronardi Produce told FPJ that he feels the time is right for the company to launch its Sunset brand into the UK, with the Campari tomato as its star turn. “We have centred our efforts on north America, where all of our programmes are established and will be switching some of our attention to developing the European and Asian markets in the next two years.

As freshinfo reported earlier this week, Campari is trumping all others in the US market, with 2005 to-date sales increasing by 47 per cent on the same period in 2004. It is the only tomato in the US marketplace with the full support of an integrated marketing programme and consumer awareness of the Campari brand increased 27 per cent from 2003 to 2005.

“Campari is our flagship variety, and we have been growing it in Holland through partnership agreements, for export to north America. The next step is to attempt to establish programmes into the UK,” Mastronardi said.
