Water availability and water footprint were among the most frequent responses when Campden BRI recently consulted its members on their scientific and technical needs.

The food and drink manufacturing industry uses 10 per cent of public water supply as an ingredient, yet DEFRA has set the UK industry a target to reduce water consumption by up to 25 per cent in some areas of the country, in its Food Sustainability Strategy.

In a similar way to measuring a carbon footprint, measuring water emissions is emerging as a method to measure the environmental impact of manufacturing activities.

A seminar has been organised at Campden BRI to help companies with the practical aspects of this, due to be held on November 11.
