Cameo resumes leading role

The first of this year's home-grown Cameo are now on retail shelves. The Club apple will again receive enthusiastic backing from customers and exclusive marketing agent Norman Collett Ltd, as its exponential growth curve continues.

There are now 90,000 Cameo trees planted in the UK, with the crop doubling year-on-year. Some 1,600 bins of the popular variety have been harvested this season, and depending on grade-out this should yield 40,000 cases of fruit.

Norman Collett managing director Andy Sadler said: “There is every indication that Cameo will be excellent this year. Generally, we've seen good colour, good eating quality, high sugar levels and the right sizes for the market.”

The UK retailers stocking Cameo this year are Tesco, Somerfield, Co-op, Budgens and Booth's. Sampling sessions will be carried out in both Somerfield and Booth's before the end of January and a promotional support programme is in place for the variety through to the end of its season, in late March.
