The club apple Cameo is looking to extend the English season considerably and increase production due to a good level of UK demand.

It is hoped that production in the UK and Germany can be increased considerably as their domestic markets have proved buoyant, as consumer awareness and perception continues to rise.

There is also a suggestion that there may be an opportunity to extend the availability of the product in the UK by importing stocks from France, which grows a smaller fruit size suited to consumers in Britain.

Fiona Davidson, European project manager for Cameo, told freshinfo: “It has been a difficult year but we have had some great coverage in the UK through the secondary apple season launch and consumer awareness of the tastiness of Cameo is improving.

“We have done some trials of a new selection of Cameo in Kent and found an apple with an improved grade-out that is slightly redder but still very much bi-coloured - so the future is looking promising.”
