Food waste is a huge industry problem

The University of Cambridge is hosting a workshop to look at waste and sustainability problems in the food industry this month.

The university hope to tackle issues such as food industry sustainability and how manufacturers can reduce current levels of waste subjects which arose following a recent Cambridge University study which found that there are particular problems within the food manufacturing.

These included that there are poor level of skills available to reduce wastage, many companies which are short of resources and time to put into waste management and production management difficulties as food perishes quickly.

The workshop will, therefore, look at lean manufacturing, improving performance through reduced waste and identifying and managing improvement projects.

The event is particularly aimed at first line supervisors and team leaders who need to understand the principles and basic techniques of management across a range of business operations.

Delegates will be given an overview of the main issues facing supervisors and will be helped to focus on issues which can quickly and directly influence the performance of their business.

The one-day workshop will take place at Homerton College, Cambridge on Tuesday February 17.

The Institute for Manufacturing (IfM) is part of the University of Cambridge Department of Engineering. It combines research, education and industrial practice to provide a unique environment for the creation of new ideas and approaches to modern industry - from understanding markets and technologies, through product and process design to operations, distribution and related services. The project is funded by a DEFRA.
