The European Food Safety Authority has confirmed that Californian prunes are good for digestion.

The result marks a five-year wait for the California Prune Board after the submission of detailed scientific evidence to the EFSA.

As a result of the ruling, the health benefits of Californian prunes can now be marketed in the European market.

“This news affirms what we have known all along, that prunes are good for you," said Jennette Higgs, consultant nutritionist for the California Prune Board. "They are an excellent healthy snack - just three make up one of your five a day, they are a good source of potassium which helps maintain normal blood pressure and they provide a natural source of fibre."

Mark Dorman, international marketing director of the California Prune Board said: "We are pleased our latest scientific evidence has finally been approved by European scientists."

California prunes now account for 44 per cent of the UK market.
