Californian grape stocks up

Stocks of table grapes in California are 67 per cent up on last year, according to the latest figures released by the US department of agriculture.

A total of 11.5 million cases of fruit was in store in the state on 15 November.

Red Globe accounts for most of the increases and the number of cases was 850,000 up on the same point in 2009, compared to 600,000 more cases of Crimson seedless. Other red seedless varieties accounted for just over one million cases of the rise.

White seedless across all varieties amount to about 1.1 million of the increase, but Fisher Capespan chief operating officer in charge of procurement, Mark Greenberg, is not concerned by the volumes. He said: “The Chilean Flame harvest is late… This should give California growers ample time to move their inventory. As for white seedless, the market is actually tightening up.”
