Californian association turns 75

California Tree Fruit Agreement (CTFA) is celebrating its 75th anniversary.

Originally established in 1933 and headquartered in Reedley, California, in the heart of the San Joaquin Valley, CTFA administers marketing order programmes on behalf of California’s fresh peach, plum and nectarine farmers.

Fruit production began back in the 1700s, and expanded rapidly into a large industry in 1869 with the creation of the trans-continental railways. Fruit was taken right the way to the East Coast in refrigerated box cars, opening enormous market potential.

In 1933, farmers joined together to create the California Tree Fruit Agreement, which exists today to provide domestic and international marketing and research support to the 1,100 growers of California peaches, plums and nectarines.

Some 20 per cent of all the region’s peaches, plums and nectarines are exported.
