California Prunes were first ever natural food to be awarded ‘Bone Health Approved’ status by ROS
California Prunes and the Royal Osteoporosis Society (ROS) have renewed their partnership for a second year, following the charity’s continued recognition of the positive effects prunes can have on maintaining healthy bones.
The ROS is the UK’s leading charity dedicated to improving bone health through research, advice, and education. Its Bone Health Accreditation Scheme and accompanying ‘Bone Health Approved’ logo helps consumers easily identify food and drink, supplements, and living aid choices that contribute towards better bone health.
California Prunes were the first ever natural food to have been awarded the ‘Bone Health Approved’ status, which followed the publication of several studies demonstrating the impact prunes have on skeletal health.
Esther Ritson-Elliott, director of international marketing and communications for the California Prune Board (CPB), commented: “California Prunes contain a range of vitamins and minerals that contribute to the maintenance of normal bones, including vitamin K and manganese.
“The California Prune Board supports research into the effects prune consumption has on bone strength, and the role they play in mitigating fracture risk for example. As a result, we’re delighted that California Prunes have again been recognised by the ROS, and we look forward to helping them raise awareness of the importance of good bone health.”
Vanessa Rossiter, corporate partnerships manager for the ROS, said: “ROS is the UK’s only national bone health charity, and our Bone Health Accreditation Scheme provides consumers with the reassurance that accredited products and services have been assessed by a trusted independent expert. Consumers can have confidence that the product does what it claims to do for bone health.”
Highlighting the nutritious benefits of California Prunes, registered dietitian and professional nutritionist, Jo Travers, noted: “The minerals needed to make bones strong are also required in other functions in the body so when reserves of these minerals get low, they can be released from the bone to fulfil these needs.
“Over time this can lead to a weakening of the bones. The best way to protect against this is to consume plenty of these micronutrients through our diet. California Prunes provide some of these key minerals and have been shown to improve bone health. The ‘Bone Health Approved’ logo raises the importance of bone health and helps consumers make healthy choices in the foods they buy.”
