California markets 100m grape cartons

The California Table Grape Commission has reported that almost 100 million cartons of grapes were marketed last season from the Golden State.

The season runs from May to January each year but hits its peak between October and December, and this is usually the only period when the US fruit appears in the UK marketplace.

Crimson Seedless tops the variety table, accounting for nearly 20 million cartons and is followed by Flame Seedless and Red Globe.

Thompson Seedless is only fourth on the list, demonstrating the growing trend toward red seedless types and away from white. Output in 2011 is expected to rise.
