President Bush has lashed out in the trade war between Europe and America claiming unfounded suspicion of GM food was responsible for famine in Africa.

The arguments from US officials is that Europe's ban on GM foods has a direct link to poverty and Washington are pressing ahead with attempts to dismantle EU health and safety regulations.

Bush, addressing the biotechnology conference in Washington, said: 'Acting on unfounded, unscientific fears many European governments have blocked the import of all new biotech crops. For the sake of a continent threatened by famine, I urge the European governments to end their opposition to biotechnology.'
