Bunched watercress hits Waitrose

The Watercress Company (TWC) is supplying watercress in a traditional bunched format to Waitrose, to give the retailer year-round availability of UK organic supplies of the salad.

“We started supplying on December 3, and will have the product in Waitrose stores until early March,” said Chris Taylor, TWC’s supply account manager. The bunches are sold as units, rather than by weight, in pillowpacks, and retail at £1.39 each.

TWC’s winter supply complements supplies of UK organic watercress from John Hurds Organic Watercress in Wiltshire, which supplies Waitrose throughout the rest of the year. “Our product has full traceability on every bunch that leaves our farms,” said Tim Jesty, watercress production manager at TWC. “We are very excited to be able to supply Waitrose with organic bunched watercress, as this enables Waitrose to be the only high street retailer in the UK to stock British bunches of watercress all year round.”

Preparation of the beds for winter product at TWC’s Dorset farm begins in early September, where it is cultivated in organic beds approved by the Soil Association.

Each bunch of watercress has a unique traceability code, which enables Waitrose customers to trace where their watercress was grown at www.yourwatercress.com.
