Bumper UK raspberry crop arrives early

The British raspberry crop has arrived two weeks early following what was the warmest spring for 100 years in many parts.

And the current harvest has delivered over twice the volume compared to the start of the 2010 season, according to British Summer Fruits, which represents the sector.

It expects the raspberry season to peak on June 26 with 100 per cent of raspberries on supermarket shelves being home-grown.

Ample supplies of British raspberries will be available through to the end of September.

“April and May’s uncharacteristically warm weather, the lack of frosts and good pollination means that this year’s bumper raspberry crop is not only early but the fruit is also sweeter and juicer,” said Laurence Olins, Chairman of British Summer Fruits.

Met Office forecaster Barry Gromett said: “We’ve certainly had an extraordinarily dry spring and June will continue to show fine spells of weather with temperatures expected to remain in the high teens and lower twenties.”

Raspberries continue to be one of Britain’s favourite berries with more than 9,000 tonnes selling last summer.
