Britain is set to more than double its Cameo apple output over the next five years as growers undertake a major planting programme.
This year British growers are expected to produce a crop of 2,900 tonnes, up from the weather-hit 1,900t the year before. While some crops have been affected by frost damage and large sizes, growers have been able to sell larger fruit for processing thanks to high juice prices.
Growers, who have been impressed by Cameo's durability in store, have major planting programmes on the way. In 2017/18 an additional 80,000 trees are being planted in Britain, with 60,000 to follow in 2018/19 and the same number again in 2019/20. That is expected to put output up to around 7,000t by 2022/23.
Speaking at Fruit Logistica in Berlin, Cameo representative Adrian Barlow said: 'New orchards are coming into production this year and next. We have 20 years of experience in growing. There's been lots of clonal development and clones are more stable under British conditions now.'
Cauflight has established itself as the clone of choice for British growers, though some are picking other alternatives such as Caured or Cauvil as they seek out even deeper colours.
Cameo's storability will help retailers sell into June and July, according to Barlow, which would mean completing 12-month availability for English apples.
The brand will continue to be promoted on social media and via its website, with Sainsbury's, Tesco, Morrisons, Waitrose, Lidl, Aldi and the Co-op all stocking the fruit.
