This year’s Fruit Logistica sees a new level of collaboration for British companies as they look to promote their products and services to the world.

In a new initiative, the Commercial Horticultural Association, Potato Council and Horticultural Development Company are collaborating with a newly expanded stand.

The idea of the unified stand is to allow trade visitors to meet industry experts from across the UK fresh produce industry. The three bodies are also hosting a first-ever reception on the stand in Hall 8.2/A-07 on Thursday 7 February from 4.30-6pm. Visitors with an interest in seed potatoes, horticultural produce and production, services and supplies from the UK are being invited to attend.

The CHA will also operate an industry information stand where visitors can find out details of British participants and their products via the UK Preview Guide, collect a copy of the CHA Buyers’ Guide and conduct meetings.

WHAT'S ON SHOW?

Caithness Potatoes will be promoting its varieties and seed potatoes, and will be joined by Irish Potato Marketing Limited (IPM), a specialist in potato variety innovation, seed production and marketing.

Mylnefield Research Services will showcase its expertise in breeding and research into potatoes, raspberries, blackberries, blackcurrants and other soft fruit.

Elsewhere, visitors can meet Russell IPM, one of the leading manufacturers of insect pheromone-based monitoring and control products.

XL Horticulture Ltd, a leader in plasticulture and suppliers of specialist products for the soft-fruit industry, will be showing its spectral filter covers for improved fruit production.

Meanwhile Fresh Pod is a new product that can extend the life of fruit and vegetables by up to four times longer.

The product is described as removing ethylene and airborne spores, moulds and rots from stores containing fresh fruit, vegetables and flowers, including organics.

POTATOES IN FOCUS

In Berlin the Potato Council will be promoting the benefits of the high-quality seed potatoes grown in Britain, which have a reputable plant-health status.

Robert Burns, head of seed export at the Potato Council, said: “Britain undergoes rigorous inspections and certification which actively promotes healthy, vigorous seed.

“Britain produces a wealth of varieties, bred specifically to match domestic and overseas growing conditions and grown successfully in more than 50 countries.”

The Potato Council-sponsored quality assurance scheme was set up to provide seed growers and buyers with extra confidence in the high health and quality of the seed product.

Expert crop-storage advisers will be on hand from Potato Council’s Sutton Bridge Crop Storage Research facility, the UK’s leading post-harvest applied research facility for agricultural storage. Burns added: “Potato Council works to support the seed-growing and export industry and we are here at Fruit Logistica in 2013 to demonstrate typical British varieties.

“Our seed breeders and exporters will be on the stand to talk to customers and contacts about how British seed can help potato businesses worldwide.” —

FLOWER FOCUS

It’s not just at Fruit Logistica where British companies will be in the spotlight. The CHA has also been busy organising the country’s appearance at the IPM Essen show, which took place this week in the German city of Essen. The event is a major one for ornamentals.
