Bristol Fruit Market celebrated its 100th birthday with a charity breakfast event attended by over 80 chefs, media and customers.
Following a welcome speech by Total Produce regional director Nick Matthews, guests were treated to a breakfast cooked by local chef Adrian Kirikmaa of St Monica’s Trust and a tour of the market to meet the traders.
“On the day we raised a total of £440 for Magic Breakfast, which will help provide 2,000 breakfast for children in need,” said Matthews.
Banana brand Chiquita marked the occasion with a special display at the market, as did wholesale firm Mack, which has been trading at the market since 1874.
The event also served to promote the launch of a new website for the market, featuring its history and information about suppliers. It also includes links to social media and seasonal updates from award-winning Bristol chef Jo Ingleby, of the Redcliffe Children’s Centre.
“After a brief introduction, our visitors were then treated to a tour of the market and a chance to meet the traders and see the fantastic array of produce on display and learn more about the important part the market plays in the food provision not only within Bristol but in the whole of the south west and beyond,” Matthews added.
