Rainbow Growers Group (RGG) has laid the first foundation stone for the extension of its Agricultural Logistics Centre at De Lier in the Netherlands.

The site will double in size to 13,000 square metres, just over a year after it was last expanded to handle the group’s increasing business. The latest enlargement will enable RGG to place a second grading machine, which has rapidly become a necessity as existing members grow and new members are brought into the fold.

The group is an ambitious growers' association with 24 members who grow bell peppers, aubergines, tomatoes, sweet pointed peppers, chilli peppers and radishes. Next year RGG expects to grow by a further 20 per cent. In 2006, when work is completed and the second grading machine is running at full capacity, RGG will grade produce from about 100 hectares. The group - officially acknowledged as the first Dutch growers' association in Brussels - began in 1997 with just 15ha.

A statement said: “[There is] not only trouble and affliction in the world of fruit and vegetables. Rainbow Growers Group shows with the building of the second warehouse that she dares to invest in the future and that she definitely does see great possibilities for pesticide free cultivation and an optimal tracking and tracing system. Rainbow Growers Group doesn't only think in short term, but also and especially in producing in a sustainable and sound way.”
