BRC sets out new food safety standards

The British Retail Consortium (BRC) has released its Global Standards for Food Safety 6 with expanded sections on foreign body control, hygiene and housekeeping.

The standard is a requirement for any audits taking place from January 2012.

The Fresh produce Consortium has said it is in talks with the BRC and publishers, TSO, about producing an updated version of the Guideline for Category 5 Fresh Produce to help companies interpret the changes.

It wants to clarify the new position on packing fresh produce and provide practical guidance and examples.

It is also setting up a meeting in which firms can read the draft document and offer feedback.
